Phantom Blade Zero release date: when it launches, and why Steam says October 28
The Phantom Blade Zero release date is October 29, 2026, on PS5 and Windows PC. That’s less than four weeks away as of October 5.
You’ll see October 28 on Steam and Epic, though, while the PlayStation Store says October 29. As far as we can tell, that’s a time-zone effect: the game unlocks on the evening of the 28th in the US and on the 29th almost everywhere else. S-GAME hasn’t published the exact unlock minute in anything we checked, so the table below is our estimate. It assumes the same 10:00 AM Beijing slot the studio used when pre-orders opened (7:00 PM Pacific on August 11).
| Region | Estimated unlock |
|---|---|
| Pacific (PDT) | 7:00 PM, October 28 |
| Eastern (EDT) | 10:00 PM, October 28 |
| UK (GMT) | 2:00 AM, October 29 |
| Central Europe (CET) | 3:00 AM, October 29 |
| Pakistan | 7:00 AM, October 29 |
| India | 7:30 AM, October 29 |
| China | 10:00 AM, October 29 |
Use that as a planning guide, not a promise. We’ll replace it the moment S-GAME or a store confirms a time.
Has it been delayed? Once. The date was first set at 9 September at The Game Awards in December 2025. In early June 2026, S-GAME moved it about 50 days. Founder Soulframe Liang said the team needed time to “complete a number of clearly defined and genuinely important improvements,” some landing at launch and some in later updates. Early August brought word that development was complete, which makes a second slip less likely.
What is Phantom Blade Zero?

Phantom Blade Zero is a single-player wuxia action RPG developed and published by S-GAME and built on Unreal Engine 5. It’s the latest entry in the Phantom Blade series, though nothing we’ve seen says you need earlier games to follow the story.
You play Soul, an elite assassin working for a secretive organization called The Order. He’s framed for the murder of its patriarch, hunted by his own people and left with a fatal wound. A tainted heart keeps him alive, but only for 66 days, and that countdown is the spine of the story and a key part of the hardest difficulty mode.
The setting is the Phantom World, with the story playing out across the Wulin, the martial-arts underworld familiar from wuxia fiction. Think roughly Ming-era China mixed with steampunk machinery, dark fantasy and horror. S-GAME calls the look “kungfupunk.”
Martial arts star Donnie Yen is part of the project. He worked as a creative consultant and is the facial and motion-capture performer for the character Mó Yuan, a casting revealed alongside the August pre-order trailer.
Phantom Blade Zero gameplay and combat explained
Combat is the reason people are watching this game. Previews describe it as fast and fluid, closer to a character-action game with Sekiro-style parrying than a slow, stamina-heavy Soulslike. Here’s how the pieces fit.
Sha-Chi: the resource everything runs on
Instead of a classic stamina bar, combat uses Sha-Chi, a shared resource that you and your enemies both manage. You build it by landing attacks and parrying. You spend it on heavy Sha-Chi attacks and on blocking. Drain an enemy’s Sha-Chi and their stance breaks.
Two enemy attack types matter most:
- Brutal moves drain a lot of your Sha-Chi if you block them.
- Killer moves can’t be blocked or parried at all, so you’ll want to avoid them instead.
Weapons: Blades and Phantom Edges
Soul carries two primary weapons (Blades) and two secondary weapons (Phantom Edges) at the same time. Phantom Edges include cannons, lances, axes and hammers. The August State of Play confirmed 30+ Blades and 25 Phantom Edges. Some store pages still say “20+” Phantom Edges, which looks like the older figure.
The detail that matters in practice: switching your primary weapon mid-fight restores Sha-Chi, fully or partly. The game wants you to juggle two Blades rather than commit to one moveset. Weapons also differ in properties such as bleed and reach, and some enemy techniques can be unlocked by defeating the enemy that uses them. In PC Gamer’s hands-on, one Blade, the Juggernaut, builds charge with every parry and releases it as a heavy attack.
Difficulty modes, and whether it’s a Soulslike
S-GAME says it isn’t a Soulslike, and most previews back that up on feel. PC Gamer’s hands-on found even the hardest setting less punishing than Sekiro and more generous with parry and stamina windows than Nioh. GamesRadar, after a 90-minute hands-on, called it more forgiving than the Soulslikes it resembles, though the writer still died several times. Gaming Trend noticed a few rough edges it linked to the delay.
The four modes:
- Wayfarer: the most approachable, aimed at a smoother, more cinematic run.
- Pathbreaker: the middle tier.
- Hellwalker: the challenge mode. The parry window is only about two frames shorter than on lower modes. The real difference is that enemies hit harder, failed parries cost more Sha-Chi, and bosses react to how you play. If you parry every hit in a combo, a boss may hold back its finishing blow.
- 66 Days: an unlockable hard-limit mode where the story clock becomes real. Reports say deaths eat into your 66 days and running out ends the run for good. Coverage differs on the exact rules, so we’ll confirm them at launch.
If you bounced off Sekiro-style games, the takeaway is that timing still matters here, but the lower modes appear built to be learned rather than survived.
Length, checkpoints and endings
TechRadar reported a 20 to 30 hour main story with about 20 more hours of side content, bosses with a checkpoint at phase two, and a rematch mode for boss fights similar to Sekiro’s. Wikipedia and Wccftech both describe eight endings shaped by your choices. Treat all of this as reported until we can confirm it in the final game.
Is Phantom Blade Zero open world?
No. Soulframe Liang has said the game is neither an open world nor a linear adventure from start to finish. It sits in between.
- Eight hand-painted ink-wash maps connect into one seamless world.
- Bells act as fast-travel points between places you’ve discovered.
- The maps give a rough sense of direction in complex regions rather than marking every objective.
- Some areas are locked until later, and there are optional bosses, weapons and secrets off the main path.
Liang has compared the structure to the interconnected design of the older Dark Souls games rather than Elden Ring’s open world, and press coverage often compares it to Black Myth: Wukong. If you’re hoping for a huge map full of icons, this isn’t that. If you prefer handcrafted regions with loops and shortcuts, it probably is.
Phantom Blade Zero trailers and gameplay trailers worth watching
If you only have time for one video, make it the State of Play deep dive. Here’s what each official video is good for:
| Video | What it shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Enter the Wulin: State of Play gameplay deep dive (August 17, about 20 minutes) | Combat, 30+ Blades, 25 Phantom Edges, eight maps, difficulty modes, Donnie Yen | The single best look at how the game works |
| Pre-order trailer (August 11, about 11 minutes) | Boss fights and story, plus the Mó Yuan reveal | Seeing the pacing and presentation |
| Release date trailer (December 2025) | Original date announcement | History only; the date is outdated |
| 22 minutes of demo footage from S-PARTY 2025 (IGN China) | The “Seven Star Swords Formation” level | An older build, before the delay |
A caution: trailers and broadcasts are compressed and edited. Judge frame rate and hit feel from hands-on impressions, not from a stream.
Phantom Blade Zero on PS5
Here’s what the PlayStation Store page confirms:
- PS5 Pro Enhanced
- DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers
- Tempest 3D AudioTech
- Game Help support
- One player, ESRB Mature
Performance is the open question. The only specific PS5 targets we found come from 2023 developer interviews, when Soulframe Liang said the plan was “two modes: 2K at 60 FPS and 4K at 30 FPS,” with the team still pushing for 4K at 60. That was stated as a goal, not a promise, and we haven’t seen it re-confirmed for the final game. One outlet reported a smooth 60 fps on PS5 Pro in a CES 2026 build. Until launch-day testing, assume nothing about PS5 modes.
Is it a PS5 exclusive? Not exactly. It launches on PC the same day. PlayStation Universe reported a timed console exclusivity of at least 12 months, meaning no Xbox version at first. S-GAME said back in 2024 there was “no exclusive deal at this time,” and it hasn’t announced Xbox plans either way. There is no PS4 version.
Phantom Blade Zero PC requirements (Steam and Epic)

The official specs on the Steam page are modest for an Unreal Engine 5 game, but both targets assume upscaling is on.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Target | 1080p / 30 FPS, upscaling on | 1440p / 60 FPS, upscaling on |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | Intel Core i5-10600K / AMD Ryzen 5 5600X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | GTX 1660 6GB / RX 5500 XT 8GB | RTX 3060 Ti 8GB / RX 6700 XT 12GB |
| Storage | SSD required | SSD required |
Ray tracing and path tracing have their own tiers. S-GAME lists an RTX 5060 8GB for ray tracing at 1080p/60 and an RTX 5080 16GB for path tracing at 2160p/60, again with upscaling.
A few things players keep asking about:
- Install size: not announced in the sources we checked.
- Steam Deck: listed as Unknown.
- DRM: the game uses Denuvo.
- Will my GTX 1660 cope? It’s the official minimum for 1080p at 30 fps with upscaling. Real-world performance is unknown until launch, so wait for tests if you’re borderline.
For a recent example of how upscaling-based spec sheets played out at launch, see our Blood of Dawnwalker PC requirements guide.
Price and editions: which version should you buy?
| Edition | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $59.99 | Full game |
| Digital Deluxe | $69.99 | Full game, Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form outfits, digital artbook, digital soundtrack |
Pre-ordering either edition unlocks two items early: the Treasure Basin accessory (10% more Remnant Dust drops) and the Legacy outfit. Both can also be earned through normal progression, so you don’t lose them by waiting. On Epic, buying the game also gets you a Soul outfit and a pickaxe in Fortnite.
Which one? Nothing in the Deluxe Edition affects gameplay. If you don’t care about outfits, an artbook and the soundtrack, Standard is the complete game. Prices vary by region on Steam. Analyst firm Alinea logged $39.84 in China against $60 in the US, so check your own store before assuming.
Demo and physical copy: what’s confirmed

Is there a demo? Not a public one. Hands-on demos have been event-only, including CES 2026 and the summer shows. A PlayStation Store listing that looked like a demo appeared in August and was taken down, and the August State of Play didn’t mention one. Anything beyond that is a rumor.
Is there a physical edition? None has been announced. Pre-orders are digital only. Retailer Play-Asia has said a PS5 disc will ship, but S-GAME hasn’t confirmed it and major retailers haven’t listed one, so treat disc claims with caution.
What players are worried about
The same questions come up across Reddit, YouTube and Facebook. Here’s where each one stands.
- “Is there even much hype?” A popular r/videogames thread asked exactly that. The numbers say yes: S-GAME announced 3 million wishlists across all platforms, and Alinea estimates 300,000 Steam pre-orders in the first week and roughly $14.5 million in revenue, at about 73% of Black Myth: Wukong’s pace at the same point. Those are estimates, not final sales.
- “Will the combat feel good?” This is the big one. Some players say they’re excited but want to feel the deflect timing and hit sounds before committing, which a demo would answer and nothing public does yet. Previews are positive, but they’re short sessions.
- “Is it too hard?” Previews point the other way. Four difficulty tiers and a forgiving lower end are designed to answer this.
- “Why no physical copy or demo?” No official explanation yet.
- “Will it run on my PC or Steam Deck?” See the PC section. The honest answer is wait for launch tests.
- “Is the delay a bad sign?” Not by itself. The studio named specific improvements and says development is complete.

Buy at launch if you love fast, parry-based combat, you’re drawn to wuxia, or you want a fresh single-player action game with real weight behind it.
Wait for reviews if you’re on a borderline PC, need a physical copy, or want proof that the combat feels right on your hardware.
The timing is tight. Marvel’s Wolverine arrived on September 15; our Marvel’s Wolverine review covers how it landed. GTA 6 is dated November 19 on PS5 and Xbox, and our GTA 6 news roundup tracks that. Phantom Blade Zero sits between them.

How we put this together
We reviewed S-GAME’s announcements, the PlayStation, Steam and Epic store pages, Sony’s State of Play coverage, and hands-on previews from PC Gamer, GamesRadar, Gaming Trend, TechRadar and The Outer Haven. We also used reporting from Wccftech, Push Square, Kotaku, Notebookcheck, Game Informer and PlayStation Universe, and analyst estimates from Alinea. Where sources disagreed, we say so instead of picking one. Fan wikis were used only to cross-check.
Not yet confirmed: the exact unlock time, final PS5 performance modes, install size, Steam Deck status, a demo, a physical edition, the exact rules of 66 Days, and final story length.
